The Ultimate Day Trip: Our Unforgettable Experience at Ranguana Caye, Belize
There are travel destinations that look beautiful in photos, and then there are places that completely take your breath away the moment you arrive. For us, Ranguana Caye is exactly that: a slice of untouched tropical paradise that instantly feels like a private sanctuary.
Located off the coast of Placencia, this stunning 2-acre private island resort delivers an authentic, intimate tropical escape that captures the true essence of Belize. While we visited as a day trip rather than staying overnight, the island team treated us like absolute royalty from the moment we arrived.
Here is exactly what it is like to experience the magic of Ranguana Caye!
Getting There: Heading Out from Placencia
Our journey began in San Ignacio, where we got picked up by our trusted partners Belize Ground Shuttle. We were then dropped off in Placencia, where we hopped on the boat at the municipal pier. The boat ride out is an experience in itself, offering beautiful views of the coastline as you head into the deep blue.
The Warmest Belizean Welcome
Our adventure started the moment we stepped off the boat, captained smoothly by Evel, who navigated the turquoise Caribbean waters with ease. As our feet hit the soft white sand, we were greeted by the island manager, Ms. Karissa, with open arms and genuine Belizean warmth.
Before we could even think about unpacking our beach gear, we were handed cold, freshly cracked coconuts to drink the ultimate tropical welcome refreshment.
Ms. Karissa then walked us on a private tour of the entire island. Because the caye is just 2 acres, the walkthrough was intimate and personal. She showed us the lay of the land, introduced us to the crew, and shared what makes this eco-resort so special. By the time the tour was over, we already felt like part of the island family.
100% Eco-Friendly & SustainableRanguana Caye proves that you can enjoy paradise without leaving a heavy footprint. The entire island runs completely on solar power and is fully eco-friendly.
You get to experience the raw, natural beauty of a remote island environment. It is incredibly freeing to look around and know that the resort leaves a minimal footprint on this delicate ecosystem. It’s the perfect place to fully disconnect from the noise of everyday life and reconnect with nature.
Intimate Accommodations: A Peek Inside the Cabañas
During our private tour with Ms. Karissa, she showed us the island's exclusive accommodations. Even though we weren't staying overnight, seeing these structures up close made us instantly start planning our next trip.
Ranguana Caye features three beautiful cabañas, with one of them being oceanfront, ensuring the island never feels crowded. Each cozy, rustic-chic cabaña comfortably sleeps up to three guests and includes private balconies with chairs looking straight out at the ocean.
They are named after local coastal life:
- Laughing Bird Caye
- Man-of-War
- Seagull
Stepping inside, you can see how incredible it would be to wake up, open the door, and have the crystal-clear Caribbean sea just steps from your bed.
Island Fun: Paddleboarding & Birthday Celebrations
Ranguana Caye caters to all types of travelers whether you want to relax or get active. One of the best perks of a day trip here is that you have full access to the island, including paddleboards and kayaks! Paddleboarding over the calm, crystal-clear water around the island is the perfect way to spot marine life right beneath you.
The vibe on the island is incredibly joyful. While we were there, a family was using the island to celebrate a special birthday, adding a wonderful, festive energy to the day. It really proved that the caye is a fantastic spot for groups, families, and special milestones.
Double the Adventure: Two Epic Snorkeling StopsIf you love marine life, the customized snorkeling tours here are a dream come true. Under the expert guidance of our guide, Danny, we didn't just go swimming once; we got to experience two entirely distinct snorkeling stops. What we appreciated most was Danny’s extreme kindness and attention to safety; he kept a close eye on everyone, making us feel completely secure in the water.
Stop 1: Around the Island: Our first dip was right off the shores of Ranguana Caye. It was a relaxed, beautiful introduction to the local shallow reefs, perfect for getting our fins wet and observing the resident marine life thriving right next to the beach.
Stop 2: Out by the Barrier Reef: Next, we headed further out to sea to explore the world-famous Belize Barrier Reef. This is where the magic really happened. The visibility was incredible, giving us the chance to swim alongside an amazing array of wildlife, including colorful tropical fish, sea turtles, elegant white-spotted stingrays, and friendly nurse sharks!
A Taste of Belize: Lunch on the Island
Working up an appetite in the ocean meant we were ready for a hearty meal, and the island kitchen absolutely delivered.
For lunch, we were served a spectacular, traditional plate: perfectly seasoned rice and beans, creamy potato salad, and smoky, tender BBQ. Eating comfort food this delicious with a view of the open ocean and a gentle breeze blowing through the palms was a definite highlight of our day.
Protect the Magic: Sea Turtle ConservationAnother fascinating part of our tour with Ms. Karissa was learning about the island’s incredible dedication to wildlife conservation. Ranguana Caye serves as a vital nesting ground for sea turtles.
At the time of our visit, the island was actively protecting more than 10 active sea turtle nests!
The team works diligently to monitor the nests, protect the eggs from predators, and ensure that the hatchlings have the best possible chance of making it safely to the ocean. Learning about this firsthand added a whole new layer of meaning to our day trip. It’s inspiring to see a resort care so deeply about preserving the natural environment.
Whether you visit for a few hours or book one of their three exclusive cabañas for a weekend, Ranguana Caye is a rare gem. From Ms. Karissa's warm greeting to Tommy's fresh coconut greetings and the rows of protected turtle nests to Danny's guided shark and ray reef tours and that unforgettable BBQ lunch, this island captures a side of Belize that stays with you long after Captain Evel boats you back to the mainland.
