Belize's Top Travel Blogger: Meet Lorenzo Gonzalez from BelizeAdventure.ca

Lorenzo Gonzalez is one of the original Belize travel bloggers. He runs the popular BelizeAdventure.ca blog that provides useful and relevant content for all travelers to Belize. If you've done any online research about Belize, you've probably come across his blog. Lorenzo is a native of San Ignacio Belize, and now resides in Toronto Canada after emigrating to further his education. He visits Belize often, and continues to write about Belize and promote Belize throughout the world in his spare time. Most of his blogs are personal experiences with honest advice for travelers to Belize. In this episode he visits the Belize Travelcast studio during his visit to Belize in December and talks about some of his favorite things to do in Belize.

Surprisingly, Lorenzo tells us that visiting the Saturday market in San Ignacio as one of his favorite activities to do in Belize because that's where you get to experience the Belizean people and culture. The San Ignacio market is one of the best farmers market in the country. If you visit San Ignacio, you MUST visit the market. The popular days are Fridays and Saturdays, but it is open 7 days per week although weekdays are not as busy and don't have as much vendors. Lorenzo mentions that when you visit Belize, you must try the traditional Rice and Beans, traditional Garifuna Hudut, and fresh fruit juices.

His other favorite activities are visiting the ATM cave, and Snorkeling at Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley.

On his recent visit to Belize, he flew over the world famous Blue Hole, went fishing in Hopkins with Get to Know Belize Adventures, Sunset Sailing in San Pedro with Tuff Enuff Tours, and snorkeling at the Hol Chan marine reserve.

CARACOL MAYA TOUR Caracol, a major and dominant site in Mayan history, is an expansive city covering nearly 6 square miles and rivaling the ancient metropolis of Tikal in size, power, ... moreand riches. This is a fantastic site to visit, set high on the Vaca Plateau, in the heart of the Chiquibul Forest Reserve (a subtropical forest south of San Ignacio near the Guatemalan border). Caracol is accessed through the Mountain Pine Ridge, a beautiful area with flowing rivers and hidden limestone caves.

After a 1.5-hour drive from San Ignacio up rough dirt roads, passing through small Mayan villages and scenic countryside we will arrive at the sprawling archaeological site of Caracol. Here you will learn about the anthropology, archaeology, and flora and fauna of the area, including rare and endangered wildlife such as Keel-billed Motmots, Tapirs, Jaguars, Oscillated Turkeys, Gibnut (the “Royal Rat”), and Coatimundis.

Caracol was a huge population center at its peak, with over 150,000 inhabitants and 30,000 structures, including an astronomical observatory. It was the largest metropolis in the Mayan Lowlands during the Classic Period, built with elaborate city planning and complex agricultural systems. This site was hidden for many centuries by the trees in the tropical broadleaf forest. Today you might catch a glimpse of howler monkeys in the mammoth trees towering over the ancient Mayan ball courts and plazas. 

Revel in the engineering and architectural sophistication of the Mayan people as you climb the temple pyramid structure of Caana (Sky Temple), the highest man-made building in Belize to this day. Once at the top, nearly 135 feet above the courtyards below, you will get impressive panoramic views of Belize and neighboring Guatemala.

The history of the inhabitants of Caracol is documented by scribes of the past in hieroglyphics and carvings on the monuments, stelae, wall facades, and altars that are found throughout the site. Caracol has a very unique history, different from other major ancient cities in the region, and your guide will illuminate the rich and complicated past of this glorious civilization with a fully guided tour of the excavated portions of the Caracol site.

After touring the ruins, refresh yourself with drinks and a picnic lunch. We then continue back through the Pine Ridge area where we take a break at the Rio On Pools, a series of natural swimming holes, to cool down and relax in the clear water. We will also visit the Rio Frio Cave, which has the largest entrance of any cave in Belize.

Thick with stars all the way down to the tree line. Using high-powered flashlights to spot the eyeshine of crocodiles, kinkajou, coatimundi, raccoons, birds, resting iguanas, and much more!

Go through the tiny cut to the lagoon and you are surrounded by the giant mangroves and then shoot out into the lagoon which boasts bioluminescent plankton that lights up with any disturbance in the water.

It’s pitch black, the guide’s flashlight beam cutting across the lagoon is the only light and when he turns it off, the boat picks up speed and the wake glows to blue light. As the boat picks up more speed, the tiny algae, which settle in the lagoon during the dry season, get agitated and glow. It’s absolutely unbelievable.

Our guide will stop the boat and you just stare into the water. Schools of fish or any marine life swimming through the lagoon create a phosphorescent trail that can look like a glowing cloud in the water. Hundreds of jellyfish pulsating in the water. They feed on the algae – it’s all along their edges and inside them.

Just moving your hand around in the water is miraculous. You leave aqua blue glowing blue bubbles.

A swim in these waters is almost irresistible so we recommend you wear your swimwear and bring along a towel.
