ATM Cave Adventure with Hitch A Hike Adventures: A Journey into the Ancient Maya World
Disclaimer: Images provided by Hitch-A-Hike AdventuresSome adventures are exciting, some are breathtaking, and some leave you with memories you will never forget. My recent trip to
Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM Cave) with Hitch A Hike Adventures was definitely one of those experiences!
This past Saturday, I explored one of Belize's most fascinating archaeological sites, and let me tell you, it was an adventure from beginning to end. From crossing rivers and hiking through the jungle to exploring magnificent cave formations and learning about the ancient Maya civilization, this experience was one for the books.
If you have ever considered visiting ATM Cave, let me take you along on my journey!
The Journey Begins in San Ignacio
Our day started with our pickup by Mr. Francisco and Ms. Penny from
Hitch A Hike Adventures. Before leaving San Ignacio, we made a quick stop for some delicious tacos because, of course, every great adventure needs a little food along the way!
As we continued our journey toward ATM Cave, Mr. Francisco shared that he is a senior guide with over 20 years of experience guiding visitors through ATM Cave and other tours in Belize. As he spoke about his work, it was easy to notice the passion and love he has for what he does. You could tell that this was more than just a job for him.
And honestly, having a knowledgeable and experienced guide makes such a difference when you are about to embark on an adventure like this.
A Briefing at Teakettle Junction
Once we reached Teakettle Junction, Mr Francisco gave us a briefing about what to expect during our ATM Cave adventure. He explained the experience ahead of us, and I will admit, I was feeling a little nervous but also incredibly thrilled!
After all, this was not going to be your typical cave tour.
One of the things that makes ATM Cave so unique is that cameras, cellphones, and other electronic devices are not permitted inside the cave. That means no pictures, no videos, and no stopping to capture every moment on your phone. You simply have to be present and take it all in.
And in a world where we are constantly reaching for our phones to capture everything, there is something special about experiencing a place with your own eyes and carrying those memories with you.
Arriving at the ATM Cave Entrance
As we approached the parking lot and entrance to the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve, we could see signs providing information about the site, visitor rules, and conservation guidelines.
This is also where visitors encounter the ranger station and the entrance procedures. Ms. Penny went to collect our entrance wristbands while we prepared for what was ahead.
Seeing the entrance signs and understanding the rules was a reminder that ATM Cave is not just a beautiful natural attraction. It is also an important archaeological site that requires care, respect, and responsible tourism.
Gearing Up for the Adventure
Now, this is where the excitement really started! Once we reached the parking area, Mr. Francisco and Ms. Penny helped us get geared up with our helmets and life jackets. We were preparing to cross the river and begin our hike through the jungle toward the cave.
Before we set off, Mr. Francisco made absolutely sure that nobody was carrying a cellphone, camera, watch, or jewellery into the cave. He also provided us with a bottle of water for the journey.
With our gear on and our water bottles ready, it was time to begin!
Hiking Through the Jungle and Crossing the Rivers
Our journey to the cave took us through the beautiful Belizean jungle. As we walked along the trail, Mr. Francisco shared information about the surrounding biodiversity, pointing out different features of the environment along the way.
One of my favorite things about this part of the experience was getting to appreciate the jungle itself. We had the opportunity to observe different types of birds and enjoy the sounds and scenery of nature.
The trail also required us to cross the river three times before finally reaching the cave entrance.
Each crossing brought its own little rush of excitement. It was a reminder that getting to ATM Cave is an adventure in itself, not simply a walk from the parking lot to a cave entrance.
After our jungle hike and river crossings, we finally arrived at the entrance of the cave!
Entering the Crystal-Clear Waters of ATM Cave
Before entering, Mr. Francisco reminded us that our water bottles had to remain outside the cave. We took a moment to drink some water and listen to the safety briefing before continuing.
And then, it was time to enter!
As we made our way into the cave, the first thing that caught my attention was the beautiful, crystal-clear water. We swam through sections of the cave, climbed over rocks, and slowly made our way deeper into this incredible underground world.
The cave formations were simply breathtaking. Massive stalactites and stalagmites surrounded us, and we could also see bats in their natural environment.
Every section seemed to reveal something new. The deeper we went, the more fascinating the formations became, and I found myself appreciating just how magnificent nature can be.
It is one thing to see pictures of caves, but it is an entirely different experience to be inside one, surrounded by ancient rock formations and clear water, with nothing but your own eyes to capture the moment.
ATM Cave is truly a sight worth experiencing for yourself
Discovering the Cathedral and the Ancient Maya WorldOne of the most fascinating parts of the tour was reaching an area known as the Cathedral.
Here, we learned about the archaeological significance of the cave and saw ancient Maya pottery and human remains. Standing in a place that holds so much history was an experience that made me pause and reflect.
Our guide explained the significance of the artefacts and the importance of understanding the beliefs and practices of the ancient Maya people.
The pottery was especially interesting because the objects found in the cave were not simply everyday items left behind. Their presence, placement, and context help tell a much larger story about the rituals and spiritual beliefs associated with this sacred place.
Learning about these details made the experience feel much deeper than an ordinary adventure tour. We were not only exploring a cave; we were learning about a civilization and the history it left behind.
The Crystal Maiden: One of the Most Memorable Moments
Now, let me tell you about one of my favorite parts of the entire experience!
Reaching the area where the Crystal Maiden is located involved climbing, and the anticipation made the moment even more exciting.
The Crystal Maiden is one of ATM Cave's most famous archaeological features. The remains have become mineralized over time, giving them a sparkling, crystalline appearance.
But one of the most mind-blowing things I learned during the tour was that the individual's sex has not been definitively established. That is why it is more accurate to refer to the remains as an individual rather than confidently identifying them as either male or female.
I found that detail fascinating!
It was a powerful reminder of how much there is still to learn about the past and how important it is to approach archaeological discoveries with care and respect.
Seeing this remarkable site in person was an experience I will not forget anytime soon.
The Return Journey and a Much-Needed Snack
After exploring the cave and taking in everything we had learned, it was time to make our way back out.
As we exited, Mr. Francisco handed us a granola bar and some water. And let me tell you, after all that swimming, climbing, and exploring, that little snack was very much appreciated!
Some of us were already hearing our stomachs growling, so the timing could not have been better.
We then began the hike back to the parking lot, which took approximately 45 minutes, followed by another river crossing.
By this point, we had already experienced so much, but
Hitch A Hike Adventures still had a few thoughtful touches waiting for us.
Cold Towels, Good Food, and Excellent Hospitality
When we finally arrived back at the parking lot, Ms. Penny was waiting for us with cold towels.
And oh my goodness! If you have never experienced a cold towel after hiking through the jungle and exploring
ATM Cave, let me tell you, you need to experience it for yourself. It was such a refreshing and thoughtful touch after a physically demanding adventure.
It is the little things like these that can make a tour feel extra special.
After freshening up, it was time for lunch. We were served a delicious Belizean meal with options including pork barbecue, chicken barbecue, or stewed chicken, accompanied by traditional rice and beans, coleslaw, and a flavorful onion sauce. Vegetarian options were also available.
We also had cold Coke and water to help us cool down and rehydrate. The food was delicious, and after everything we had done that morning, it was exactly what we needed!
We sat together as a group, enjoyed our meal, and shared our favorite moments from the cave. It was lovely hearing everyone's perspective because although we had all experienced the same adventure, each person had a different moment that stood out to them.
It was the perfect way to wrap up an unforgettable day.
Freshened Up and Ready to Head Home
After lunch, we had time to shower, change, and get comfortable before heading home.
Looking back on the day, I realized that the experience was about so much more than visiting a popular tourist attraction. It was about stepping outside my comfort zone, learning about Belize's natural and cultural heritage, connecting with nature, and sharing an adventure with a wonderful group of people.
From the moment Mr. Francisco and Ms. Penny picked us up in San Ignacio to the cold towels waiting for us after the hike, the entire experience was filled with memorable moments.
Would I Recommend ATM Cave with Hitch A Hike Adventures?
Absolutely! My experience was a 10/10, and the service was 1000/10!
Mr. Francisco's experience, knowledge, and passion for guiding made the journey informative and enjoyable, while Ms. Penny's hospitality and attention to detail helped make the day even more memorable.
