Once you have been picked up from your hotel, your tour takes off towards Xunantunich – Maiden of ... morethe Rock- where you will get to cross a manual-operated ferry before your arrival at the site. Once at the site, your guide will take you on a small walk to the site, and give you the history of this once-amazing city. You will get the chance to climb the tallest structure of El Castillo. Actun Tunichil Muknal (the Cave of the Crystal Sepulchre), also known locally as ATM, is a cave near San Ignacio, Cayo District, notable as a Maya archaeological site that includes ... moreskeletons, ceramics, and stoneware. There are several areas with skeletal remains in the main chamber.
Many of the Maya artifacts and remains are completely calcified to the cave floor. The ceramics at the site are significant partly because they are marked with “kill holes”, which indicate that they were used for ceremonial purposes. One artifact, named the “Monkey Pot”, is one of just four of its type found in Central America. The Maya also modified cave formations here, in some instances to create altars for the offerings, in others to create silhouettes of faces and animals or to project a shadow image into the cave. The cave is extensively decorated with cave formations in the upper passages.
Actun Tunichil Muknal cave was first entered by the Mayas in AD 300-600. It was not until the late AD 700-900 that the Mayas went deeper into the cave to perform their ceremonies. The cave was officially opened to the public in 1998.
The cave houses various types of artifacts from ceramics and stoneware to the remains of skeletons. The Mayas consider Actun Tunichil Muknal a highly sacred location, enclosing the famous “Crystal Maiden,” who was thought to be a sacrifice victim. After decades of weathering and natural processes, the surface of the skeleton appears to be covered with a geological sanded finish, which gives the maiden a somewhat magical fairy-dust appearance.

We'll pick you up at the Cayo Welcome Center and we walk over to the Wildfire Artzmosphere where you will be greeted with a glass of local Belizean wine. After which you will get to ... moreindulge in 4 Belizean dishes filled with spices in every bite as we explore and enjoy foods from 4 of our major cultures within Belize. We start with a Creole delicacy and one of my childhood favorites, "Boil Up". Boil Up just as the name implies, is a number of boiled local root vegetables, eggs, pigtails, and fish covered in a special coconut-flavored tomato and onion sauce.
From there, we delve into the savory sensations of the Mestizo culture. You will get to indulge in the diverse corn-based foods and enjoy Belizean favorites; salutes, garnaches, and empanadas. Of course, we will be having Mayan food as well, and since we already had so much corn we're going to have some "Relleno de negro" which is a Mayan specialty also known to locals as "black dina" with coconut white rice. Last but definitely not least, we discover the authentic flavors of the Garifuna culture where we get to eat some Darasa with coconut curried vegetables and stewed beef. Darasa can be considered the Garifuna version of the Belizean tamales. We end by making our own Belizean sweet treat called "Wangla". This Experience is guaranteed to leave you "Belizeanized!"
